Question by princess: what degree/certification should I get if I want to be an event coordinator/planner?

I'm really good at planning events and would love to find a career in this field. What certification or degree should I obtain? I already hold a BS in Management, but do not know if this is enough. Please respond with knowledge. Thanks.

That's the type of field where 'experience' will be the real advanced degree you can earn. With event planning you just need to dive in head first to make waves in the industry.

Cities have much more 'events' than suburban areas. They're endless. Birthday parties, weddings, golf outings, charity blood drives, grassroots marketing campaigns... the list is endless. But, they all require an ability to multi-task, plan effectively, delegate responsibility, and communicate under stress.

Also, certain industries are more conducive to the need for event planning. Industries that have heavy exposure to the communities in which they work are the most likely... Banks, Hospitals, local parks and recreation programs, and large corporations, will pay to have somebody manage their events - either in house, or on a contract basis.

You might also consider starting your own company. If you can find an engaged couple, sell yourself as a wedding planner, and work on a bare-bones budget. During the process you'll have to forge strong relationships with the DJ or Band, caterers, florist, photographers, and maybe even travel agent. Those relationships will benefit you if you do a good job and have another client referred in your direction.
