Children

Just hanging' around with nothin' to do.

I posted the above half-stereoview photo from my own collection a long time ago. However, it seems to be a "new" discovery to others who are deemed "experts"...

HUFFINGTON POST story here : www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/12/slave-children-photo-fo...

The "Photo Experts" interviewed in the HUFFINGTON POST article are apparently not aware that this is part of a larger series of stereoviews photographed and published at a later date than speculated on in the story, the 3-D experience adding greatly to the detail and realism of the moment.

The image is perhaps closer to an 1870s (but not later than 1880s) date.

Further, I am not entirely sure that the photo belongs to the sales document that was found. It might have been added into the lot at a later date prior to storage in the attic. Also, photos of the children of slaves and ex-slaves are far more common than the "experts" are telling you.

Regardless of these technical details, the heart of the HP article is right on the mark as to the nature and condition of the slaves and children of slaves who appear in these photos.

My own flickr set has many views of such children, and even these are a fraction of what I have in my boxes of early photography. Many more can be found in the Library of Congress and other fine institutions. For those interested in such images, there is a wealth of material waiting to be studied and utilized.

As I type this, I am on the road, so cannot access my files to post the full 3-D version. Will do it later !

"......On Tuesday, July 30, 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the institution of slavery, and the subsequent Jim Crows laws that for years discriminated against blacks as second-class citizens in American society......" NPR

Okinawa_Soba has a lot original images of the descendants of slaves in America, as well as several showing actual slaves who were "freed" during the America's Civil War.

To match these images, he also has a box of 19th Century and early 20th Century images of "Black Africa", showing the tribes, roots, and culture that is now a universe away from the modern day existence of "African Americans".

Behind the faces of these few images I'm posting here, are lives and experiences that most White people in America will never understand -- either then, or now.

[This caption is the same for all. If you have read this far, no need to do so for all the others with the same picture Title]

Super funny children's toy

Children

This toy is sold in the Rabat medina under the brand "super funny children's toy".
For 20 dirhams (2รข‚¬) you can have a small G.W.Bush on a tank chasing a small Ben Laden on a skateboard (notice his hands in prayer position!).
They are magnetically repulsed, so that Bush can never catch Ben Laden.
And I find this super funny indeed.
