Ecological design – Is it the same as design for sustainability?

Question by Kulin Kid: Ecological design - Is it the same as design for sustainability?

Has anyone noticed that
'design (and policy/planning/ etc) for sustainability'
uses the old destructive paradigms of growth economics, toxic materials, and single function products, whereas 'ecological design' use PROCESSES of design and problem solving that really push green practice to a new standard ?

It would be nice if they were the same in the minds of the paper signers. However that seems to be a ways off. The more economically feasible we can make the ecological designs, the greater our bargaining power becomes.

Midnight Sun (Northern Lights Series #3)

The powerful conclusion of the epic, best-selling Northern Lights family saga. In Midnight Sun, the greatly anticipated conclusion to Lisa Tawn Bergren's Northern Lights series, the journey ends and the future begins for four friends in the wilds of Alaska. Desperate to know if her missing husband still lives, Kaatje hires a rugged yet tenderhearted guide through the perils of the Alaskan wilderness - and into what could be the greatest danger of her life. As captain of the Majestic and a mother of two, Elsa has sought to ease her aching, lonely heart. But when an old friend rekindles the spark of romance, will she allow herself to love again? With her foolish youth behind her, Tora looks forward to her wedding and a fresh start in life. But first she must confront the terrible demons of her past. Captain Karl Martensen, though widely admired, feels no emotion for any of the women in his life. He has only tender memories of the love he once lost - a love who, by God's grace, he may find again. From the fierce Alaskan wilderness to the gaiety of San Francisco society...from the familiar peaks of Bergen, Norway to the dark, churning waters of Cape Horn...witness the glorious finale of this epic family saga as four long-time friends journey out of the shadow of their darkest days into the bright sun awaiting them in the land of the Midnight Sun.

Yuichi Yokoyama makes comics in a unique language situated somewhere between the primal drives of William Blake and the elegant geometries of Sol Lewitt--they are works of philosophical complexity and stunning visual power, of which he has said, "I'm not trying to write stories that are set in the future, but rather to write stories which are delivered from references to any given epoch or time. If the history of the world had turned out differently from what we know today, men would live according to different sets of values and different aesthetics It would be a civilization completely alien to ours." This first U.S. book on Yokoyama's work combines two of the artist's central themes: fighting and building. One set of graphic stories, Public Works, details massive structures being erected across a landscape. Plot is pushed aside in favor of sheer formal verve as we watch buildings, about which we know nothing, come into being. The other set of stories, Combats, is one sequence after another of elegantly choreographed battles. Manga comics have never seen a talent that combines this level of formal ambition with such exquisitely drawn depictions of fashion, art and architecture.

The Rise of the American Comics Artist: Creators and Contexts

Starting in the mid-1980s, a talented set of comics artists changed the American comic-book industry forever by introducing adult sensibilities and aesthetic considerations into popular genres such as superhero comics and the newspaper strip. Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen (1987) revolutionized the former genre in particular. During this same period, underground and alternative genres began to garner critical acclaim and media attention beyond comics-specific outlets, as best represented by Art Spiegelman's Maus. Publishers began to collect, bind, and market comics as "graphic novels," and these appeared in mainstream bookstores and in magazine reviews.

The Rise of the American Comics Artist: Creators and Contexts brings together new scholarship surveying the production, distribution and reception of American comics from this pivotal decade to the present. The collection specifically explores the figure of the comics creator--either as writer, as artist, or as writer and artist--in contemporary U.S. comics, using creators as focal points to evaluate changes to the industry, its aesthetics, and its critical reception. The book also includes essays on landmark creators such as Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware, as well as insightful interviews with Jeff Smith (Bone), Jim Woodring (Frank) and Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics). As comics have reached new audiences, through different material and electronic forms, the public's broad perception of what comics are has changed. The Rise of the American Comics Artist surveys the ways in which the figure of the creator has been at the heart of these evolutions.
